Well What's in it for me? By W. Steven Saunders, Psy.D., President-Elect A new slant on an old pitch (and no this isn't about the gyro-ball baseball fans!)
Often when attempting to recruit new members from the "general" psychologist population, I hear, "FPA? Well what's in it for me?" Typically I answer, "Well you get the newsletter, you get 'special invitations' to CPE's, you get this, you get that, etc. etc." But recently my thinking has begun to shift. After becoming more closely involved in FPA, it's clear what's in it for me. In one word: Influence. In two words: Political Influence. I really could do without the newsletter, the free CPE's, the comradely, the networking; in fact, I could let it all go except for the influence. FPA plays an integral part in the politics of the State of Florida. What the state legislature does and how that influences our profession is of great importance. Without FPA, it would be up to all the other health care professions to dictate how, where, and with whom our practice can take place. Without that influence, we might not even be a licensed profession. So as I begin to convince my fellow psychologists to join, I find myself taking a different slant. It's not the tangible, material stuff that you get, it's the influence you get to buy. With your small investment in FPA, you get the ear of the Legislature, the Board of Psychology, the Governor and other members of government that decide your fate everyday. FPA is helping our profession to grow in power and influence so that we can grow into the fulfillment of our own great purpose: to help guide our patients, our students, and our community toward healing and wholeness.
